Loren's 3 month Celiac Disease Update

Today was Loren's appointment with the gastroenterologist for her 3 month Celiac Disease checkup. We are happy to report her gluten free diet is working...her blood count was down from over 100 (they stop counting at 100) to 14! 4 and under is normal, so she has a little way to go, but the doc thinks in 3 months she'd probably be "normal". We don't have to go back for 9 more months...so that is good news. She'll continue yearly checkups now for the rest of her life, and each year get screened for thyroid issues and diabetes...2 of the main things Celiac patients are susceptible to.

Many people have asked me how the gluten free diet is going...and I can say it is going really well! Thankfully Loren is a great eater, and she has yet to really complain about not eating any of the wheat products she loved before. She happily eats a sandwich (gluten free bread, of course) while other kids eat pizza, grilled chicken while others eat nuggets, rice cakes for goldfish (you get the idea). We feel like she actually kind of takes pride in being different. We have found many of her favorite foods in gluten free varieties (waffles, pretzels, bread, pizza, cookies, cereal), and thanks to places like Whole Foods we can find so many great things...you just have to pay about 3 times as much for them :) It's worth it though...a small price to pay for her health!
